Sri Lankan Sugar Cookies aka Gnanakatha (Naankatai)

Sri Lankan Sugar cookies are a well popular sweet among the local people and it’s very easy to make. It’s mouthwatering taste of crusty top and the soft texture in the middle of the cookie will make you speechless.

This is more suitable as an evening snack with a hot cup of tea.

This recipe will give you all the steps to make a perfect Gnanakatha unlike you have ever tasted.

Let’s start making this awesome deliciousness.


  • 45g of butter
  • 100g Sugar
  • 1 Egg 
  • 250g Flour 
  • 1tsp baking powder 
  • 1 cardamom
  • Vanilla


Combine the butter and Sugar into a mixing bowl and mix it well with a hand beater. Later you can add in the egg and whisk everything until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Next we are going to add the baking powder, crushed cardamom and vanilla. Little by little add in the flour and make a fine ball using a spatula or by hand. 

Make some small portion of the ball and apply water on top. Dip it in sugar and into the baking tray. 

Bake the cookies 15-20mins for 200 degrees.
